don't let them in.
Brainwashing. Is it BECOMING a threat or has it already BECOME a danger?
We live in a world where social media, stereotypes and images control us. Television, film, music, fashion, food, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, Youtube, blogging, personal websites, the list goes on and on. **Off topic but think about this: Most of today's "hot" talent is discovered from a thoughtless reality TV show where all they needed to do was get drunk and cause a scene OR be 16 and pregnant on camera. SERIOUSLY?!?! What is happening here!!!
- Could I possibly be a fallen victim to a brainwashing scheme? I desperately hope not. Though I admit, I too have succumbed to most of these socialistic fads... who hasn't?
The more I step out of my apartment and into the big world, the more I learn that we are no longer individuals of our own but merely clones of a bigger monster. Such social media sensations as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are fun and interesting, no doubt about that; however, they leave no room for originality. Oh look at that, you posted a picture of your cute little dog. What's going on? You checked in at a bar because your drunk friends told you to?! No way, you just bought a new iPhone case... we all must see what kind. Howoriginal.
1.) I recently had a discussion with a good friend about today's fashion. She mentioned that she would never purchase skinny jeans because she knows that she does not look good in them. She still wears her boot-cut jeans from the 90's because that's what make her look dynamite! I couldn't agree more. I love peeking into the latest fashion trends; yet, I can't imagine breaking my bank for a new wardrobe every season. I still have an entire closet full of clothes from senior year of high school and after because as long as they still fit me, I know whole-heartedly that I can walk outta my house with a VA-VA-VA-VROOM attitude in my good-looking get-up! But of course, I splurge every now and then for a little something updated and posh... afterall, a working girl deserves a little caress. =)
2.) Social media even controls what we eat. Think about it. Little kids are getting fatter every day because the marketing for junk food is tremendous. When I was 9 years old, all I wanted to eat were Pringles, Cheetos, Fruit-by-the-Foot and Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies. Yes, I was rewarded once a week with one of these delicious treats in my lunchbox, but I vividly remember swapping snacks with the other kids at lunchtime during the week just so I could get a faster taste of what I craved. The junk food and snacks weren't even the issue in the 90's though... it was the fact that we didn't have video games or cool electronic gadgets to occupy our time with. Sure, there was the basic Nintendo 64, but by the time that came out, everyone had already completed all of the games it offered, so the next best choice? Outdoors and imagination.
- I never see kids outside anymore. I always see empty parks, lonely swing sets, bicycles toppled over in driveways and no children playing in the McDonald's PlayPlace! (Wow, that was my CASTLE when I was young!) Parents have given up a vital parenting task and left it to television, movies, music and the internet. They have left the entertaining to another source because it is EASIER. I am not a parent and I can't imagine the triumphs and woes of parenting, but I do see and interact with children often in my line of work and they are all completely brainwashed into current media. (Not to mention, they are all brats.) I mean, for Christ's sake, they don't even know who Lucy is!!!! Anyone who "claims" to be an American MUST know basic Hollywood icons!
3.) Aside from childhood obesity, fashion styles and food junkies, the most influencial topic within the realm of social media is sex. BAM, I said it. If current TV and film aren't controlling your life by now, eventually, sex will. Let's take a look at today's society. We have encompassed our lives around some sort of sexual being that lies within all of us. Sex is beautiful; however, unfortunately for us, we have transformed it into garbage. The skimpy outfits girls wear to get attention from men, the careless books/movies that have surfaced depicting why a girl/guy is or isn't interested in you, the songs about sleeping with someone for money, the profound alcoholic beverage marketing wild, carefree nights and long-lasting memories (also known as STDs and/or bastard children). I read somewhere that in Europe, everyone is sexually free, despite what media says. Now, reiterating on that sentence: yes, maybe Europeans share lovers or have a collection of specific lovers, but the real truth is, they are not ashamed of sex or their sexual influences. They are openly comfortable with themselves and others and have not turned the very act of intercourse into just a petty game. They view sex as an emotional, passionate affair that is long-lasting and exceptionally powerful. They are in love with making love.
- Maybe one day, we Americans could have that... but I dare to dream. Today, circa 2012, we view sex as nothing more than a drunk mistake, a bet, a conquest, a good time, a poker night story, a game. We are pigs. Period.
Needless to say, the world is failing miserably when it comes to individuality. We are dropping out of high school, we are settling for a crummy minimum wage job, we are not challenging ourselves to be better, we are not striving for the American Dream, we are simply surrendering to the powers of social media influencing. Whether we admit it or not, we are all brainwashed in one sense or another. And hopefully we can realize we are before it's too late.
So turn off your television, close your laptop, pick up a book, take a walk, stop and smell a friggin' flower, because one day, smelling the flowers won't be a sign of living free, it will be a sign of living crazy.
